About this mod

Lets you retrieve and make thrown weapons.

Permissions and credits
In an un-modded game, thrown weapons are 1-shot items.Hit or miss, once you've thrown the weapon it is gone. It can't be retrieved. This mod changes that, and adds some other useful features as well.

Three new weapons are added to the game: a "Useful Throwing Knife", a "Useful Throwing Hatchet", and a "Useful Throwing Spear". The game's original thrown knife, hatchet, and spear have been left unchanged.

When you throw one of the new weapons at an NPC or creature:

1) If you hit, then the weapon is placed into the inventory of your target. Of course you'll need to destroy the target and loot its inventory to get your weapon back. The new weapons are "player only", so you won't see them getting thrown back at you.

2) If you miss, then the mod tries to figure out who you might have been aiming at. If it comes up with good estimate, then the weapon is dropped on the ground near the target. If the mod cannot figure this out, then it drops the weapon at your feet. I decided to use this system after playtesting mod versions where for practice purposes the weapon was just launched into the air, with no apparent target. It was frequently impossible to find the weapon afterwards. It would bounce out of sight or end up buried in a rock or wall. That was not fun. However in combat the weapons do drop near where you expect them to be.

The new weapons can be poisoned.

The new weapons can be made at any workbench. However, due to a limitation of the game engine it was not a good idea to have the workbench build 100% undamaged throwing weapons. Since they are stackable in the PipBoy screen, there are problems with how (or if) multiple copies of the same item are displayed. Unfortunately, the workbench can't build damaged items. So my mod has the workbench produce "Unfinished" versions of the new knife, hatchet, and spear. They appear in the "Misc" section of your inventory. To complete these weapons just click on the "Convert Unfinished Thrown Weps to Finished" item, which can be found at the bottom of your Weapons inventory section (it's added when you install this mod - see the picture above).Clicking there will also convert the game's original thrown knives, hatchets, and spears, if you happen to have any in your inventory. Slightly damaged, new thrown weapons will then appear in your weapons inventory.

Due to yet another game engine issue relating to stacked items, it was not practical to have the new weapons take additional damage when they are used. So unlike the rest of Fallout's weapons, the new weapons do not degrade with use. Instead, they have a small probability of completely breaking each time they are thrown. If they do get broken, they can be repaired at any workbench.

At this time, making the new weapons at a workbench is the easiest way to acquire them. They aren't that hard to make. The only other way to get them is to loot the original game versions from enemies, then convert them in your inventory.

If you ever have a hard time finding your weapon on the ground, it is possible that it dropped into a rock or some other terrain feature. For example, when I was testing against the Goodsprings Settler in Trudy's bar, the weapons always ended up inside the bar. They would be unrecoverable when that happened, unless I used the "tcl" command at the console.

Toggle the console on and off by pressing the "~" key on your keyboard. tcl lets you move through terrain, and see and take items that might otherwise be lost.Type "tcl" again to get back to normal.

If you drop a new weapon on the ground or place it in a container, then it will stay there forever (unless the container re-spawns. I can't help that!). However, if a weapon is thrown and misses, then it will delete itself after one gameday if it is not picked up. It is assumed to be lost. This is done to avoid savegame bloat, and to eliminate the unnecessary calls to the lost weapon's scripts.

You should practice throwing the new weapons against a wall before taking them into combat. They appear briefly where they strike, then disappear and will end up at your feet. I find that they usually land a little high and to the right of where I aim. This effect is especially pronounced with the hatchet.

To install, just extract the esp file into your Data directory.
